ONYX RCR Rear Tire Servicing

The rear axle uses a 24mm nut and must be torqued to 80Nm. Proper installation requires cleaning the axle and applying threadlocker to prevent loosening under load.

Tools You’ll Need

  • Lift Stand Jack
  • Tire Pump
  • 24mm Wrench
  • Hex Key Set
  • Tire Spoon Levers
  • Rim Protector

Parts and Torque

  • Rear Axle Nut: 24mm / M16 Hex Nut / Torque 80nm
  • Rear Axle Locking Nut: 24mm / M16 Hex Lock Nut / Torque 30nm
  • Rear Axle Stay Screw: M6-1 x 16mm + M6 Hex Nut / 10mm + 5mm Hex / Torque 12nm
  • Rear Brake Caliper Screws: M6 / 5mm Hex / Torque 12nm

Protecting Against Flat Tires

Improving puncture resistance reduces downtime and prevents rim damage.

  • Avoid slime sealant (water-based, can promote rim corrosion)
  • Avoid tire liners (can shift and affect balance)
  • Use 2mm–3mm thick tubes for increased durability
  • Use higher quality tires (Michelin, Shinko) for better puncture resistance

Have a Spare Tube Ready

  • Keep a spare tube available before attempting repair or replacement

Rim Protection Advice

  • Use rim protectors during tire removal to prevent damage to the rim surface
  • Proper technique minimizes the need for refinishing or touch-up

Steps for Tire Removal

  • Follow the method shown in the video below
  • Use multiple tire levers (3–4 recommended) with rim protectors
  • Work evenly around the tire to avoid pinching the tube or damaging the rim

Rear Tire Servicing Instructions

Follow these steps to service the rear tire correctly.

Preparation

  • Verify all required tools are available
  • Power off the bike and remove the battery
  • Stabilize the bike using a stand or against a wall

Removing the Rear Wheel

  • Loosen axle nuts using a 24mm wrench or socket
  • Carefully slide the wheel out, avoiding contact with the brake rotor

Tire Maintenance

  • Inspect tire for wear, cracks, or embedded debris
  • Fully deflate before removal
  • Use tire levers to separate the tire from the rim
  • Inspect or replace the inner tube as needed

Installing the Tire

  • Install tire and tube carefully, avoiding pinches
  • Ensure proper bead seating
  • Inflate to 32 PSI

Reattaching the Wheel

  • Align axle with dropouts and reinstall the wheel
  • Clean axle and hardware using brake cleaner
  • Apply 1–2 drops of threadlocker to axle threads
  • Torque axle nut to 80nm
  • Torque axle locking nut to 30nm

Final Checks

  • Spin wheel to confirm smooth rotation and alignment
  • Verify brake engagement and clearance
  • Test motor operation before riding

Proper servicing ensures consistent performance, reduces wear, and minimizes the risk of failure.
