Intro
A lot of this comes out of actually riding and being involved in the ONYX scene, especially in places like New York City, where things move fast and nothing is as simple as it looks from the outside.
The John Angel Podcast comes directly from that environment, from real situations, real interactions, and the day-to-day reality of builds, repairs, and ownership.
These aren’t scripted or theoretical. They’re based on actual conversations and things that come up regularly.
This comes from years of working through this across builds, repairs, and ownership, not just in isolation, but alongside other riders, shops, and the broader community as things continue to evolve.
A lot of this only makes sense once you hear how people actually talk through it. You don’t always know where a conversation is going to go when it starts.
It’s built on the same foundation as the site, but in a format that allows for real conversations and how things actually play out in practice. Some of it is straightforward, some of it isn’t.
What the podcast covers
The podcast focuses on topics that come up repeatedly across ONYX ownership:
- repairs and troubleshooting
- diagnostics and problem patterns
- builds and setup decisions
- ownership challenges and expectations
- real conversations between riders, including disagreements, different perspectives, and how those get worked through
- how people approach problems and make decisions
- community dynamics and interactions
- real-world situations and experiences, including where things go wrong
These are the same areas covered in written posts, but explored in a way that allows for more context, multiple perspectives, and interaction.
Why it exists
Not everything fits into a structured guide.
Some topics are easier to explain through discussion. This is especially true when they involve decision-making, tradeoffs, and understanding how different parts of the system interact. Real situations are rarely linear, and a lot of the nuance is lost when trying to reduce them into step-by-step instructions. A lot of what actually matters only becomes clear through interaction, not structure.
Conversations don’t follow a fixed path, and things often get worked through in real time. A lot of the value comes from thinking through situations in the moment, not after the fact.
These aren’t hypothetical discussions. They come from direct involvement.
A lot of the topics come from direct interaction with ONYX Motors, years of hands-on experience within the ONYX community, and ongoing conversations with riders outside of it. The same patterns tend to show up across all of these groups, often from different starting points and leading to different conclusions depending on perspective.
The podcast is where those patterns get unpacked in more detail, with the context that is often missing from written answers.
