ONYX Projects

This post will continue to evolve, featuring new projects from ONYX Motors, the ONYX community, and my own contributions, highlighting the full spectrum of endeavors.

GTV Mode Project

The “GTV Mode” collaborative Onyx RCR project is now complete, with ongoing testing to fine-tune the bike’s performance. However, details about this project are being kept under wraps for now, as rumors suggest that Onyx Motorbikes is making a comeback with updates that deserve the spotlight.

NMC Pouch Cells

58AH and 60AH For the ONYX RCR and CTY2

On December 14th, 2024, Amorge informed me that they have been discussing “NMC pouch cells” and have decided to begin testing and producing battery packs with these cells starting February 20th, 2025, with deliveries expected around mid-March 2025. In our conversation, the production will focus on 60AH and 58AH NMC pouch cell batteries for the ONYX RCR and CTY2.

Earlier this year, we tested the 58AH pouch cell version, which is identical to the 60AH, in a Jaws Mode and Sicko Mode ONYX RCR with a 58AH NMC pouch cell battery produced by NAB Batteries. During testing, with a constant DC line discharge of 175 amps and a peak of 290 amps, the 58AH NMC pouch performed exceptionally well, nearly indistinguishable from the Molicel P45B battery in Sicko Mode. On an 86°F day, even under full throttle and hard runs, the battery temperature increased by only 2°F, while many previous batteries would have seen a rise of 18°F or more under the same conditions.

Tom Zartler NMC Pouch Cell CTY2 Battery Design

Tom Zartler has created a design file for the ONYX CTY2 60AH battery and plans to develop a design file for the ONYX RCR in the future. We estimate that both batteries will be priced around $1,000 and will feature a metal protective box with a sprung handle and protective caps.

Cheetah Mode Project

Cheetah Mode is taking another pass at 60 mph, fine-tuning its ability to sustain those speeds for longer periods without overloading the system, all while keeping temperatures in check. By building on past experience and gathering fresh insights, everything mastered in Cheetah Mode will fuel the evolution of Jaws Mode, Sicko Mode, and GTV Mode. The video shows a top speed of 60 mph, verified by a Dragy performance speedometer with an ONYX 41Ah HD battery, while testing with the Amorge Samsung 50S, which topped out at 63 mph. Recently, Kelly introduced field weakening, a technique that extracts extra top speed from the controller for their Cheetah series of controllers.
