ONYX RCR 23Ah Battery Balance

The ONYX RCR 23Ah battery requires a constant voltage charger (not trickle charging) to balance properly. Check the ONYX Chargers post for compatible options, and use an outlet meter to verify charger support.

Battery Management System

Balancing ensures all 160 cells in the pack have equal voltage, extending battery life and maintaining full capacity. Unbalanced batteries degrade faster and deliver reduced performance.

Battery Balancing Function

  • The Onyx 23AH battery management system (BMS) does not have Bluetooth connectivity and is charger-activated balancing which requires connection to a balance-compatible charger for a specific duration to initiate balancing.

Battery Balancing

Using the stock Onyx RCR 5 amp charger, the battery must reach a full 100% charge before balancing begins, which starts approximately 95 minutes after the charger’s light turns green. Balancing is a gradual process, operating at low milliamp levels.

  • Perform balancing after every 15 rides.

Steps to Balance the Battery

  • Continuous Charging: Charge the battery for 72 consecutive hours.

The stock Onyx RCR 5 amp charger initiates balancing 95 minutes after the green light indicates full charge. Balancing is a slow process, performed at low milliamp levels.

Riding During Balancing

  • You can ride the Onyx RCR between balancing sessions. If interrupted, restart the 72-hour process the following evening.

Battery Unbalanced

An unbalanced 23Ah battery typically displays a full charge between 81.6V and 82.8V, instead of the expected 83.5V to 84V. It may also cut out prematurely around 74V, rather than the standard 60V.

  • If the battery cuts out at 64 volts or above, it is unbalanced to that voltage level.
  • If the battery cuts out at 60 volts, it is fully balanced.
