This page is part of the ONYX Platform Guide

This guide explains how to safely evaluate a used ONYX bike, including:

  • ONYX 72V
  • ONYX 80V
  • ONYX CTY2

Most problems on used ONYX bikes are visible before you buy them.

A clean bike is easy to recognize. A problem bike requires explanation.

Start with the quick inspection. If anything fails, do not continue.

If you verify only one thing, make it the battery.

  • Start with fast visual checks
  • Confirm battery health before anything else
  • Verify the bike under real load

Buy or Sell Safely

Used Buyer Caution

Quick Used Bike Inspection

Inspection CheckWhat to Look ForWhat It Means
OwnershipSeller can explain and recover documentationReduces risk of stolen bike
BatteryStable power under load, not just full chargeMost expensive component
WiringNo tape bundles, no exposed copperIndicates build quality
ChargerCorrect voltage for systemPrevents damage
FunctionsLights, signals, horn all respond correctlyConfirms baseline electrical health

If anything is inconsistent, slow down and inspect further.

Project Bikes vs Complete Bikes

A broken ONYX is not a cheap ONYX.

Buying a non-running or incomplete bike is not a shortcut.

What usually happens:

  • Missing or incorrect parts
  • Unknown electrical work
  • Time spent sourcing parts
  • Repeated troubleshooting

What matters:

  • 72V parts are harder to source
  • Electrical systems are not plug-and-play
  • Battery, controller, and wiring must match

If you do not understand the system, you will depend on others to finish it.

Incomplete bikes often raise questions about origin and make support harder to get.

You are not buying parts. You are buying unknown work.

Seller Interaction

Do not let the seller rush the inspection.

Ask:

  • Ownership history
  • Battery origin
  • Electrical work
  • Storage
  • What BMS app do you use

Watch for:

  • Hesitation
  • Inconsistent answers
  • Avoidance

If the seller cannot explain the system, assume risk.

What to Bring

  • Phone (BMS app and photos)
  • Flashlight
  • Allen keys

BMS Apps (Install Before You Arrive)

PlatformBatteryBMS App
ONYX 72V41AhOverkill Solar
ONYX 72V45AhSuperPower
ONYX 80V45AhSuperPower
ONYX CTY223AhOverkill Solar

You should be able to connect to the battery before buying.

If the seller cannot provide access to the BMS, treat the battery as unknown.

Rust inside electrical areas is a warning.

Harness & Internal Wiring Inspection

  • ONYX 72V / ONYX 80V: remove side panels
  • ONYX CTY2: remove battery tray

Clean

  • Uniform routing
  • Factory connectors
  • No splices

Problems

  • Tape bundles
  • Crimp connectors
  • Mixed gauges
  • Melted insulation

Messy wiring indicates deeper issues.

Battery

The battery determines performance, range, and reliability.

Universal Checks

  • No swelling
  • Indoor storage
  • Stable under load
  • No cutouts

A full charge can hide problems. Behavior under load matters more.

Test between 30% and 70%.

ONYX 80V~92V~80V~68-72V
ONYX CTY2~67V~60V~52-55V

Identification

  • 72V and 80V use metal battery cases
  • CTY2 does not

If missing, assume modification and inspect wiring and mounting immediately.

Confirm:

  • App connects
  • Cells visible
  • Stable readings

Final Check

If something feels off, do not ignore it.

Clean bikes are obvious. Problem bikes require explanation.

Walking away is part of the process.
