Buying a Used ONYX
When buying a used ONYX RCR, ask if the bike and battery were stored indoors or outdoors, especially during the winter, as indoor storage is better for both. Inspect the frame for rust, cracks, dents, or crash damage. Check the battery compartment for rust or modifications, and ensure the spokes are tight. Examine the welds and paint for signs of stress.
A well-maintained bike should have minimal rust and a clean, well-cared-for appearance. Also, inspect the condition of external electrical wiring, including any modifications around the motor phase wires, headlight, taillight, or aftermarket electrical parts.
Pro tip: Have the seller ride the bike to demonstrate the functionality of the taillights, headlights, turn signals, and regenerative braking. Ensure it runs smoothly without strange noises. Switching the odometer from MPH to KM/H can help reveal if it has been reset.
Ask Seller
- Two key fobs
- Two wood cover keys
- 5 amp or 10 amp Charger
- Proof of purchase paper or email
- Does the BMS app have a password
Switch Odometer MPH to KM/H
In normal display mode, press and hold the “SET” button (bottom left button) for 10 seconds to switch from “km/h” to “MPH.” Release the button, then press and hold the “SET” button (bottom left button) for another 10 seconds to switch back from “MPH” to “km/h.”
ONYX 41AH Battery
Download the ONYX RCR Battery BMS app beforehand to connect to the battery yourself. Ensure the battery has been stored indoors, especially during winter, and inspect its physical condition.
BMS APP Screenshot Example
The BMS app should show a balance delta between 0.005V and 0.080V, as illustrated by the 0.0012V in the screenshot. The BMS info screen should display readout numbers similar to those in the screenshot.
ONYX 23AH Battery
The ONYX 23Ah battery has not been produced since the fall of 2022. A well-maintained battery can last until the summer of 2027, while a poorly maintained one may degrade faster and prematurely cut out. Inspect the battery for any physical damage or signs of wear.
When evaluating its condition, have the owner charge it to 72 volts and demonstrate its performance in Sport mode at full throttle. This test places a high demand on the battery-if it’s in poor condition, it will either cut out immediately or reveal an imbalance in its cells.
Charger
Ensure the charger is functional and appropriate for the battery.
Motor
Listen for any unusual noises or grinding sounds from the motor. Inspect the hub motor wires for wear, damage, or improper repairs, especially if the bike has been modified or previously repaired.
Controller
Verify the controller’s amp limit to ensure it matches the advertised specifications, as many used bikes may have aftermarket controllers installed.
Suspension
Compress the suspension to ensure it’s responsive and not leaking oil.
Brakes
Test the brakes for responsiveness and noise. Inspect the brake pads and rotors for wear.
Electrical System
Inspect all wiring for fraying, cuts, or improper splicing. Check for loose or messy connections around the ONYX RCR. Sloppy wiring modifications often indicate that internal wiring may have been improperly altered.
Throttle and Display
Ensure the throttle and display are responsive and functioning correctly.
Tire Condition
Inspect the tires for wear cracks or punctures. Verify the size and type of tires stock Mita, Michelin, or Vuro 2.75" or 3.00" x 17" or aftermarket.
Wheels and Spokes
Spin the wheels to check for wobbling or bent rims. Inspect the spokes for tightness and condition.
Aftermarket Parts
Ensure any modifications, such as upgraded controllers, batteries, or suspension, were done professionally. If the motor has been replaced or repaired, such as in hub wiring, verify that the work was completed correctly.
Controller Tuning
Ask if the bike has custom tuning and whether it aligns with your intended use.
Handling
Take the bike for a test ride to ensure it handles smoothly and comfortably, paying attention to any unusual noises or vibrations.
Top Speed and Torque
Test the bike’s top speed and torque delivery in Sport mode.
Ownership
Make sure the seller provides proof of ownership or a bill of sale.
Maintenance History
Inquire about the maintenance history, including battery care, tire replacements, and any electrical repairs.
