XLR Charge Connector

There are a few ways to position and use the battery’s XLR charge connector. If you choose Option 3, be sure to periodically check that the connector is clean and free of dirt or debris. Using the 3D-printed external dust cap helps keep it protected.

  • Option 1: Leave the XLR connector inside and slide the cover back to charge.
  • Option 2: Use an XLR extension cable.
  • Option 3: Route the XLR charge connector through the right-side hole to the outside.

The XLR connector diagram might look a bit confusing, but when the XLR male (charger) and female (battery) connectors are facing each other, pins 1, 2, and 3 on the male line up directly with pins 1, 2, and 3 on the female.

XLR Failure

If the battery’s XLR charge connector is exposed to rain, snow, mud, or salt, it can lead to damage and potential failure-eventually preventing you from charging the battery.

Route the XLR extension cable through the right-hand side hole at the top of the ONYX RCR frame to make the charge port accessible externally. This setup helps shield the battery’s original XLR connector from weather and wear.

Cleaning XLR Charge Connector

Cleaning male and female XLR connectors is simple but should be done carefully to avoid damaging the pins or sockets. Here’s a solid step-by-step guide.

Tools & Materials

  • Isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher)
  • Lint-free swabs (foam-tipped preferred)
  • Compressed air (optional)
  • Small brush or soft toothbrush (optional)
  • Contact cleaner (DeoxIT D5 is a popular choice)
  • Toothpick or plastic pick (optional for stubborn debris)

How to Clean a Male XLR Connector

  • Inspect the pins for corrosion, dirt, or bent pins.
  • Apply isopropyl alcohol to a lint-free swab or foam-tipped stick.
  • Gently wipe the pins—rotate the swab around each pin to remove dirt or oxidation.
  • Use compressed air (optional) to blow out any loosened particles.
  • Apply contact cleaner if needed, especially if the pins are oxidized or there’s audio crackling during use.
  • Let it dry completely before reconnecting.

How to Clean a Female XLR Connector

  • Inspect for dirt or oxidation inside the socket holes.
  • Dip a toothpick or swab (wrapped in lint-free cloth) in isopropyl alcohol.
  • Carefully insert into each socket, rotate gently to clean.
  • Use a plastic pick or tiny brush if any debris is stubborn.
  • Spray contact cleaner lightly inside the connector (optional).
  • Let it dry completely, and blow out with compressed air if needed.

Extra Tips

  • Never use steel or metal tools inside connectors—they can damage or short pins.
  • Avoid over-saturating with alcohol or cleaner.
  • If connectors are extremely corroded, consider replacing them.
